Dr. Jim Ault
Jim Ault, Ph. D., has been breeding perennial plants for 25 years as the Director of Ornamental Plant Research at Chicago Botanic Garden . His 32 introductions to date include the first orange coneflower (Echinacea ‘Art’s Pride), the Meadowbrite™ series of Baptisia, numerous Phlox, and other selections. He also manages the Chicagoland Grow’s® plant introduction program, conducts tissue culture propagation research, is active in plant exploration trips to obtain plants for breeding and the Garden’s plant collections, and is building the Garden’s nascent orchid collection.
In 2001 Jim attended the Wisconsin-Illinois Lily Society’s summer show. Intrigued, he took in their lectures that winter, and became thoroughly smitten. He began assembling and breeding lilies in his backyard the following year, a hobby he has continued to this day. Early emphasis on species and Asiatic hybrid lilies has evolved into a current collection of over 1,500 stems of Trumpet, Aurelian, and Orienpet lilies. At the core of this collection is a significant number of bulbs from Bob Griesbach’s breeding efforts. Utilizing this legacy from Bob Griesbach and from other breeders, Jim will present on his ongoing efforts to breed these groups of lilies for garden pleasure in the Midwest.
